In the spring of 2023, the life of 16-year-old Montez Jamonta Mitchell was cut short by gunfire in Yazoo City, Mississippi. On the evening of May 20th, the young man, known to some as 'Monta,' became another victim of gun violence in the Clubview Circle area of the city. He was a student at Yazoo City High School and worked at Popeyes.
The circumstances surrounding his death were brutal.
According to a family member, he was shot in the leg, seemingly to prevent him from escaping his attacker, before the fatal shots were fired. The loss plunged his family into deep grief as they struggled to comprehend the violent end to a young life.
In the weeks that followed, law enforcement agencies, including the Yazoo City Police Department, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, and the U.S. Marshals Service, worked to bring a suspect to justice. Their investigation led them to 21-year-old Willie Nune. On June 15, 2023, Nune was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of Montez Jamonta Mitchell, marking a significant development in a case that had shaken the local community.
