In the early morning hours of April 22, 2020, 63-year-old John Felton, a Black male, was found shot to death outside of his residence at the Oakhaven Apartments in Yazoo City, Mississippi. The investigation into his death quickly pointed to a violent robbery.
Within a day, law enforcement arrested 19-year-old Alonzo Alexander and charged him with capital murder in connection with Felton's death.
During the arrest, investigators recovered items that had been stolen from Felton, as well as the gun they believed to be the murder weapon.
Further investigation revealed that Alexander was not unknown to law enforcement. Just a month prior to Felton's murder, he had been arrested and charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle at the Shady Lane apartment complex. In that earlier incident, he was one of four suspects arrested after a stolen gun was discovered in the vehicle they were in.
Following his arrest for Felton's murder, Alexander was held at the Yazoo County Regional Correctional Facility. The legal proceedings against him were reported to be delayed due to a backlog at the Mississippi State Crime Laboratory, which was processing evidence in the case. While incarcerated, Alexander was reportedly involved in another violent incident, allegedly stabbing a correctional officer in the neck.
