In the early hours of a February morning in Yazoo City, Mississippi, a burst of gunfire outside a local nightclub shattered the predawn quiet, leaving four men dead. Among them was Edward Johnson, a 36-year-old man who, along with his 30-year-old brother Kevin Johnson, was pronounced dead at the scene on February 6, 2017. The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. outside the L & L Lounge, a venue formerly known as Club 66.
Two other men, Jerranden Allen, 32, and Gabriel Townsend, 35, were also fatally wounded in the attack. Allen and Townsend were transported to the University Medical Center in Jackson but ultimately succumbed to their injuries.
The investigation swiftly pointed to one individual, Briddell Barber, as the sole suspect in the quadruple homicide. A manhunt ensued, and later that same morning, U.S. Marshals located and arrested the 27-year-old Barber in Jackson. Investigators believe the motive for the shooting stemmed from Barber's anger over his girlfriend getting a ride home from the club with one of the victims. It appeared that three of the victims were tragically killed simply for being witnesses to the initial confrontation. The incident sparked outrage and fear within the community, particularly as details of Barber's criminal history came to light.
At the time of the nightclub shooting, Barber was already facing a murder charge for the March 2016 death of Justin 'Butch' Porter. He had been released on a $100,000 bond while awaiting trial for that earlier crime, a fact that the local police chief was reportedly unaware of. Barber was subsequently charged with one count of capital murder for the four deaths at the nightclub. The capital murder charge was applicable because he was accused of killing multiple people in a single criminal act. In November 2021, Briddell Barber pleaded guilty to the murders of Edward Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Jerranden Allen, and Gabriel Townsend, as well as the 2016 murder of Justin Porter. By entering a guilty plea, Barber avoided a potential death penalty sentence and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a close to the legal proceedings in a case that had deeply affected the Yazoo City community.
