In the small city of Columbia, Mississippi, the life of Shawn 'Chunk' Mitchell, a 33-year-old male, was cut short on the evening of January 4, 2019. Known affectionately as 'Chunk,' he was a familiar and well-liked figure in his community, working as a butcher at Meat Masters and dedicating his time to umpiring youth sports. His life, however, came to a tragic end inside his home on Dale Street.
On that Friday, police responded to a call and found Shawn Mitchell dead from a single
gunshot wound. His wife, Holly Ann Mitchell, was at the scene and was subsequently arrested in connection with his death. The incident was particularly harrowing as it was reported that Holly shot Shawn while holding their three-year-old daughter. Neighbors later told investigators they had heard the couple arguing prior to the shooting.
During the investigation, Holly Mitchell claimed that she had acted in self-defense, alleging that Shawn had been violent and was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time. However, a search of the home uncovered a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine, and Holly was also charged with possession of a controlled substance and child abuse. The district attorney stated that Holly had threatened Shawn with the same gun on a previous occasion.
Holly Ann Mitchell was charged with second-degree murder. In April 2023, a jury found her guilty of second-degree murder and possession of methamphetamine. Following the conviction, Shawn's parents requested that the judge waive a life sentence. Holly was subsequently sentenced to the maximum penalty of 40 years in prison for the charges.
