In the summer of 2021, a young man's life was tragically cut short in Columbia, Mississippi. Tommy DaQuan Burton, a 23-year-old Black male, was at a residence on Gates Road on the evening of Friday, July 9th. It was there that violence erupted, and the sound of gunfire pierced the night. When Marion County deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Burton suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Marion General Hospital for medical attention, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to them at the hospital.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed towards a suspect. The day after the fatal incident, on July 10, 2021, a 28-year-old man from Columbia named Jeremy Devonta Cagins turned himself into the Marion County Sheriff's Office. His surrender was in connection with the death of Tommy Burton. Following his surrender, authorities charged Cagins with second-degree murder.
While an arrest was made swiftly, law enforcement officials indicated that the investigation into Burton's death was not closed. They have suggested that the case remains active and ongoing. This has left open the possibility that there could be further developments or that other individuals may yet be identified as being involved in the circumstances that led to the untimely death of Tommy D. Burton. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young life as the legal process against the accused began to unfold.
