In the quiet town of Columbia, Mississippi, a routine traffic stop on May 8, 1989, spiraled into a tragic event that would claim the lives of two dedicated police officers. Patrolman Billy Doyle Patterson, a 49-year-old White male and a 12-year veteran of the Columbia Police Department, initiated the stop on Main Street, directly in front of the Marion County Courthouse.
Unbeknownst to him, the man he pulled over had expressed his intent to kill the first police officer he encountered.
As the situation escalated, a gunfight erupted between Patrolman Patterson and the suspect. Patterson called for backup, and Patrolman Wayne Grant Henebry, 36, arrived at the scene to assist. Tragically, both officers were shot and killed during the exchange of gunfire. The weapon used by the suspect was a shotgun. The man who took their lives was on parole for the murders of two other people in separate incidents.
Following the deadly confrontation, the suspect fled to his wife's home with the intention of killing her as well. However, his violent rampage was brought to an end by his own son, who was present at the house and fatally shot his father to protect his mother.
Patrolman Patterson was a United States Navy veteran who had served in the Vietnam War. He was survived by his wife and four children. The community mourned the loss of both dedicated officers, who were remembered for their bravery and commitment to their duty.
