In the quiet town of Columbia, Mississippi, a routine traffic stop on May 8, 1989, spiraled into a tragic event that would claim the lives of two dedicated police officers. Patrolman Billy Doyle Patterson, a 49-year-old White male and a 12-year veteran of the Columbia Police Department, initiated the stop on Main Street, directly in front of the Marion County Courthouse. Unbeknownst to him, the man he pulled over had expressed his intent to kill the first police officer he encountered.
