Patrolman Billy Doyle Patterson, aged 49, tragically lost his life on May 8, 1989, in Columbia, Mississippi. He was a dedicated officer with the Columbia Police Department and a United States Navy Vietnam War veteran. On that fateful day, Patrolman Patterson made a routine traffic stop on Main Street in front of the Marion County Courthouse. Unbeknownst to him, the man he had stopped had previously declared his intention to kill the first police officer he encountered.
