In the early hours of April 6, 2020, in Jackson, Mississippi, 11-year-old Jordan McCoy was asleep in his bed when his life was tragically cut short. Multiple gunshots were fired into his family's apartment on Forest Avenue, with one of the bullets striking and killing the young boy. The senseless act of violence against an innocent child sleeping in his own home sent shockwaves through the community.
For nearly two months, the investigation into Jordan's death continued, a period marked
by his family's grief and a public plea for answers. Tensions rose to the point of a heated exchange between the family's attorney and the mayor of Jackson during a news conference, with the attorney criticizing a perceived lack of transparency in the investigation. However, behind the scenes, the Jackson Police Department was working diligently to bring those responsible to justice.
In early June 2020, a breakthrough in the case was announced with the arrests of three men who were subsequently charged with Jordan's murder. The suspects were identified as Diallo Vaughn, 24, Kemarshon Cassity, 20, and Kadarius Taylor, 25. The arrests were the result of evidence processed by a crime lab that identified the three as suspects.
The circumstances of the suspects' apprehensions varied. Vaughn was already in custody for another fatal shooting that had occurred in February of that year. Cassity was taken into custody in May by police and the U.S. Marshals Service. Taylor, the final suspect to be apprehended, turned himself in to authorities. Both Taylor and Cassity had other recent encounters with the law; Cassity was facing charges for aggravated assault, and Taylor was facing a charge of felony firearm possession.
