Freddie Adams Jr. was a Jackson, Mississippi native with a wide range of talents and a large, loving family. Born on December 24, 1976, to Freddie Sr. and Maddie Adams, he was their only son. The 47-year-old Black man was a father to two sons of his own, Freddie Henderson and Freddie Montgomery, and a grandfather. Known for his ability to succeed at his endeavors, he enjoyed working on cars and had skills in painting, drawing, and woodwork. He also had a passion for music.
Freddie, who attended Jackson Public Schools and worked at a Popeyes restaurant, had recently dedicated his life to Christ, being baptized at Jones Chapel M.B. Church in May 2024.
In the early morning hours of Thursday, August 1, 2024, his life was cut short. Shortly before 2:30 a.m., police were called to a home in the 500 block of Lawrence Road in North Jackson. According to authorities, Freddie had gotten into an argument with his girlfriend. During the dispute, the girlfriend's son, Baylon Graham, is believed to have gotten involved, shooting Freddie. When officers arrived, they found Freddie had been fatally wounded. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Detectives with the Jackson Police Department immediately began an investigation. With assistance from the JPD Task Force and the JPD Action Team, investigators quickly identified a suspect. Later that same evening, police arrested 20-year-old Baylon Graham in connection with the fatal shooting.
Baylon Graham was subsequently charged with the murder of Freddie Adams Jr. A police detective called the killing another "senseless act of violence," urging the community to find ways to resolve conflicts without resorting to firearms. "Put the guns down. Let’s get back to talking, let’s talk things out, let’s work things out without having to end folks’ lives," Detective Tommie Brown said. As of August 2024, the case was proceeding through the legal system.
