In the fall of 2020, a violent encounter in a McDonald's parking lot in Canton, Mississippi, claimed the life of 24-year-old Dakarrie Johnson. The shooting, which occurred on October 21, 2020, also resulted in the death of 13-year-old Robert Luckett, Jr. and left two other individuals in critical condition.
The incident unfolded on Highway 22 when Deondric Green opened fire on a vehicle occupied by four people. All four occupants were struck by gunfire. The motive for the shooting was believed to be an act of retaliation. Investigators learned that Green had been shot several months prior and had targeted the vehicle at the McDonald's after seeing an individual with whom he had a previous dispute.
Following an investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Canton Police Department, Deondric Green, who was 22 years old at the time of his sentencing, was taken into custody. Green later pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Johnson and Luckett. He was sentenced to serve 40 years in prison without the possibility of early release or parole.
