On what should have been a festive Memorial Day, May 29, 2006, a day of celebration turned into a scene of tragedy at South Shore Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Seventeen-year-old Julio Diaz-Guillen, a young man known for his willingness to lend a hand, had spent the morning at his new yard-work job before joining friends for a birthday picnic in the park.
He arrived with two friends and his uncle around 6 p.m., ready to enjoy the holiday.
The gathering was a large one, with family and friends enjoying the pleasant weather. Among those present were Raymundo Munoz, a friend of Julio's from work, and Raymundo's girlfriend, Eunice Torrez. The celebration was tragically interrupted when Eunice's estranged husband, Octaviano Juarez-Corro, arrived uninvited. An argument ensued, and Juarez-Corro opened fire on the crowd. In the chaos that followed, Julio Diaz-Guillen and Raymundo Munoz were fatally shot. Three other people, including Eunice Torrez, were also wounded in the attack. Julio was shot once in the back of the head and once in the back. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:31 p.m.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Octaviano Juarez-Corro fled and became a fugitive from justice. For years, the case remained a painful open wound for the families of the victims. The investigation continued, and in September 2021, Juarez-Corro was added to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. A significant reward was offered for information leading to his capture. The long arm of the law finally caught up with him on February 3, 2022, when he was apprehended in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, after more than 15 years on the run. His capture brought a sense of closure to the long and painful wait for justice for the families of Julio Diaz-Guillen and Raymundo Munoz. However, Juarez-Corro's time in custody was short-lived. On January 22, 2023, he was found unresponsive in his cell at the Milwaukee County Jail and was pronounced dead.
