Patrolman William Murphy, aged 30, was a dedicated officer with the Louisville Police Department, serving for six years until his untimely death on November 19, 1909. On that fateful day, while off-duty, Murphy heard the sound of gunfire near 19th Street and Baird Street. Driven by his sense of duty, he went to investigate the source of the gunshots. Upon arriving at the scene, he discovered a shooting victim and was informed that the shooter, the victim's neighbor, had just entered his house.
