In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 30, 2021, a night of work at the Green Light Lounge on Seventh Street Road in Louisville, Kentucky, turned tragic for Dion Shane Rudolph. The 44-year-old male, who was a manager at the gentlemen's club, found himself in the midst of a violent altercation that would ultimately claim his life and that of another man. The incident unfolded shortly after 3 a.m. when security at the club began to escort 30-year-old Blair Wells from the establishment.
It was at this point that a man allegedly pulled out a handgun and opened fire.
Rudolph was struck by the gunfire inside the club. He was rushed to University Hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly before 4 a.m. Wells was also shot during the chaotic scene. Following the initial shooting, the suspect and Wells reportedly attempted to flee the club, with the gunman firing several more shots toward the doorway. During this exchange of gunfire, Wells was hit. A witness transported him to Mary & Elizabeth Hospital, and he was later transferred to University Hospital, where he died the following day. The entire incident was reportedly captured on the nightclub's surveillance video.
In the days following the shooting, family and neighbors remembered Dion Rudolph as a kind man who was deeply connected to his South Louisville neighborhood and a beloved father to his two children. He was known for looking out for those around him and was described as someone who never met a stranger. His family, devastated by the sudden and violent loss, made public pleas for an end to the gun violence plaguing the city.
The investigation into the double homicide led Louisville Metro Police to a suspect within a few weeks. On June 16, 2021, authorities announced the arrest of 32-year-old Elijah Carter. He was charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Dion Rudolph and Blair Wells. In addition to the murder charges, Carter also faced four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, and tampering with physical evidence. His identification was reportedly aided by the Kentucky State Police.
