On a spring evening in Lexington, Kentucky, the life of 21-year-old Antonio Franklin, Jr. was tragically cut short. A Black / African American male known for his warm and contagious smile, he was a graduate of Lafayette Senior High School and had attended Kentucky State University. On April 13, 2014, while at Duncan Park, he was caught in the crossfire of what police believe to be a random act of gun violence.
He was found near the swings with a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. He passed away the following day. In an act of profound generosity, his organs were donated, saving the lives of four other individuals.
The investigation that followed determined that Antonio was an innocent bystander to the violence that unfolded. Witnesses reported seeing several men chasing the victim and others fleeing after shots were fired. Police also investigated a possible connection to another shooting that occurred just minutes before in the same area. The senselessness of his death deeply impacted his family and the wider Lexington community, sparking a movement to address gun violence.
In the months that followed, law enforcement made several arrests in connection with the shooting. A male juvenile was charged with murder. Later, four teenagers were charged in the slaying. Daymion Jacobi Sanders was sentenced to seven years in prison for second-degree manslaughter. Nashiem Dixon was charged with murder, while William Dixon and Bryan Brown faced charges of attempted murder. Sanders stated that he and a friend were shot at by a group in a car and that he returned fire.
In the aftermath of her son's death, Antonio's mother, Anita Franklin, became a prominent advocate against gun violence. Just ten days after his passing, she organized the first Antonio Franklin Jr. VIP Program Peace Walk, an event that has continued annually to honor his memory and promote a message of peace within the community. Through these efforts, Antonio's legacy lives on, not as a victim of a violent crime, but as a symbol of the community's resolve to create a safer future.
