Chadrik Alexander Boone Sr. was a 31-year-old Black man and a father of seven children. His life was cut short in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday, February 3, 2024, in his hometown of Lexington, Kentucky.
Just after 3:30 a.m., Lexington Police officers responded to a report of a shooting on the 900 block of Winchester Road. In a parking lot near Liberty Road and Detroit Avenue, they discovered Chadrik Boone suffering from a gunshot wound.
Responders deemed his injuries life-threatening, and he was rushed to the UK Chandler Medical Center for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead just after 5 a.m.
Detectives from the Personal Crimes Section immediately began investigating the city's second homicide of the year. They asked the public for help, encouraging anyone with information to call the police or submit anonymous tips through Bluegrass Crime Stoppers. For months, the investigation continued as authorities worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting and identify a suspect.
A significant breakthrough in the case came on June 7, 2024. Lexington Police announced that they had identified a suspect who was arrested hundreds of miles away. Kyshawn Owens, 28, was taken into custody in Yonkers, New York, by members of the U.S. Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Task Force and the Yonkers Police Department. Owens was held at the Westchester County Jail to await extradition back to Fayette County.
After being returned to Kentucky, the case against Owens proceeded through the court system. He reportedly entered a guilty plea to a charge of manslaughter on March 17. Following his plea, Kyshawn Owens was sentenced to serve 12 years in prison for his role in Chadrik Boone's death.
