Months after Jimerson's death, a break in the case came with the arrest of 31-year-old Theodrick Tillman of Frankfort, Kentucky. He was initially charged with murder in connection with Jimerson's death. As the legal proceedings unfolded, it was revealed that there was no definitive evidence to prove whether the gunshots or the crash was the ultimate cause of death, nor was there conclusive evidence that Tillman was the person who fired the weapon. This ambiguity led to a plea deal where Tillman's charges were amended.
In January 2023, Theodrick Tillman pleaded guilty to facilitation of murder, first-degree criminal mischief, and being a persistent felony offender. As a result of the plea agreement, he faced a 12-year sentence.
