In the closing days of 2023, a fatal shooting in Lexington, Kentucky, claimed the life of Devon Dockery Jr., a 24-year-old male. The incident unfolded on the evening of December 27th on the 500 block of Pemberton Street. Police responded to reports of gunfire shortly before 5 p.m. and discovered Dockery inside a vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Dockery's death led authorities to 26-year-old Luquan Hayes. Evidence gathered by the Lexington Police Department painted a grim picture of the events leading up to the shooting. According to court documents, surveillance footage from a nearby grocery store captured Hayes approximately 37 minutes before the incident. Further video evidence showed Dockery picking up Hayes on Chestnut Street just moments before the shooting occurred. Investigators also uncovered cell phone records that indicated communication between Dockery and Hayes about 50 minutes prior to the fatal encounter, suggesting a pre-existing connection between the two.
Surveillance footage from residences on Pemberton Street captured the critical moments of the shooting. The video showed the vehicle pulling over to the side of the road, followed by the distinct flashes of a muzzle from the passenger's side. Immediately after, a figure identified as Hayes was seen exiting the vehicle and fleeing the scene. Tragically, the vehicle, not left in park, rolled forward and struck another car after Dockery was shot.
Based on the evidence compiled, Luquan Hayes was arrested and charged with the murder of Devon Dockery Jr. He was subsequently booked into the Fayette County Detention Center.
