In the fading light of a November evening in Lexington, Kentucky, events were set in motion that would tragically end the life of Wesley Eugene Carter Jr. On November 22, 2019, in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Camelot Drive, the sound of a gunshot shattered the evening calm. It was some time before police, who were in the area on another call, were flagged down and discovered Carter lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound.
Carter, a 28-year-old male, was rushed to the
University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. For nearly two weeks, he fought for his life. However, his injuries proved to be too severe, and on December 4, 2019, he succumbed to the gunshot wound that had been inflicted upon him. The Fayette County Coroner's Office officially declared his death a homicide.
In the wake of the shooting, Lexington police began their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. They learned from several people in the vicinity that they had heard a gunshot a while before the police arrived, suggesting there might have been a significant delay between the shooting and when Carter was found.
