In the early morning hours of August 16, 2020, Mykel Waide, an 18-year-old male, was shot and killed in Lexington, Kentucky. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. near Newtown Pike, where police responded to reports of a large disorder with shots fired. Waide, a recent graduate of Tates Creek High School and an aspiring student at the University of Louisville, was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was a former member of his high school's basketball team and was reportedly in town to say goodbye to friends before starting college.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was the result of an altercation between rival gangs at the Residence Inn on Newtown Court. Waide was not the intended target but was tragically caught in the crossfire when multiple shooters opened fire. In addition to Waide, three other individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Eyewitness accounts and surveillance footage indicated that shots were fired from a vehicle into a crowd of people.
In connection with the shooting, three suspects were eventually arrested and charged with murder. Tayte Patton, then 22, and Antonio Turner, then 19, were taken into custody in late September 2021. A third suspect, 33-year-old Antwone Davenport, was arrested in Illinois in December 2021. Despite the arrests, the legal proceedings took an unexpected turn when a grand jury declined to indict Patton and Turner. Subsequently, the murder charge against Davenport was also dismissed, though it was noted that the charges could be refiled if new evidence emerged.
