In the late summer of 2019, the life of 19-year-old Nathan Shelby, a White male, was tragically cut short in Lexington, Kentucky. The events leading to his death began to unfold on September 3rd, stemming from a drug transaction that soured. Shelby was shot at an apartment on East Reynolds Road and succumbed to his injuries a few days later on September 7, 2019, at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.
An autopsy confirmed that a single gunshot wound to the head was the cause of death.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led Lexington police to three suspects from Georgetown: 20-year-old Rafael Malik Brewster, 18-year-old Jah'Quez Crutchfield, and 18-year-old Moses Thompson. According to police testimony, the trio had arranged to buy drugs from Shelby at a restaurant. Feeling they had been "shorted" in the deal, they proceeded to Shelby's apartment with the intent to rob him. Thompson later admitted to being the driver and knowing a robbery was planned. Surveillance footage from the restaurant captured the suspects before they headed to the apartment. Witnesses reported seeing multiple people with handguns, and a physical altercation occurred before the fatal shot was fired. After the shooting, the suspects fled the scene.
All three men were apprehended and initially faced serious charges. Brewster and Crutchfield were charged with murder, while Thompson faced a charge of facilitation to murder. In November 2019, a grand jury indicted Brewster and Crutchfield on charges of murder, first-degree robbery, and burglary. Thompson was indicted on charges of complicity to first-degree robbery and complicity to burglary, with the facilitation to murder charge being dismissed.
In July 2022, the legal proceedings concluded with all three men accepting plea deals that amended their original charges. Jah'Quez Crutchfield pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter, first-degree robbery with a firearm, and second-degree burglary, receiving a 20-year prison sentence. Rafael Malik Brewster's murder charge was dismissed, and he pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary and second-degree robbery, resulting in a sentence of 12 years and six months. Moses Thompson pleaded guilty to first-degree facilitation of robbery and first-degree facilitation of burglary. He was sentenced to 10 years, which was suspended, and he was placed on probation.
