In the quiet hours of a Sunday evening in Lexington, Kentucky, a life was tragically cut short, leaving a void in the hearts of those who knew him. On August 23, 2020, 19-year-old Patrick Harrison Stover, a male resident of the city, died from a fatal gunshot wound sustained inside a home on Centre Parkway. The incident unfolded around 10:45 p.m., a time when the night should have been filled with the promise of a new week, but instead was shattered by an irreversible act.

services were called to the scene, where they found Stover with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was quickly transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital at 11:25 p.m. The Fayette County coroner's office would later rule his death a homicide, a declaration that underscored the gravity of the event that had transpired between two friends.
Present at the scene and immediately taken into custody without incident was Stover's friend, 19-year-old Jarred Lockard. It was revealed that Stover and Lockard had been handling a firearm when it discharged, leading to the fatal injury. Lockard admitted to shooting Stover, maintaining that it was an accident. He told investigators that he believed the gun was unloaded when he pointed it at his friend and pulled the trigger. The firearm used in the shooting was later found to have been stolen.
Lockard was initially charged with second-degree manslaughter, a charge that suggested a reckless disregard for human life rather than a malicious intent. In the ensuing legal proceedings, this charge was amended to reckless homicide, to which Lockard pleaded guilty. During his court appearance, a judge sentenced him to four months in jail followed by five years of probation.
