In the summer of 2022, the life of 19-year-old Demetrius A. Shelton Jr., a Black male from Lexington, Kentucky, was tragically cut short. On the evening of August 13th, at approximately 8:00 p.m., the vibrant life of the young man was extinguished in a burst of gunfire in the 1300 block of Centre Parkway. Officers from the Lexington Police Department rushed to the scene following reports of a shooting, where they found Shelton suffering from grievous gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical
services promptly transported him to the University of Kentucky Hospital, a place of hope that would unfortunately bear witness to a sorrowful end. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, Demetrius Shelton Jr. was pronounced dead at 9:19 p.m., his passing marking the city's 29th homicide of the year. The perpetrator of this violent act had vanished into the night, having fled the scene before the arrival of law enforcement.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Lexington Police Department's Robbery/Homicide Unit launched an immediate and thorough investigation. Detectives canvassed the area for evidence and witnesses, piecing together the final moments of Shelton's life. However, the suspect remained elusive, and as of the most recent updates, no arrests have been made in connection with the case. The investigation remains open, with authorities continuing to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to the identification and apprehension of the individual responsible for Demetrius Shelton Jr.'s untimely death.
