In the late hours of a Wednesday evening in Lexington, Kentucky, the life of 20-year-old Herbie Quintell Booker, a Black/African American male, was cut tragically short. On April 7, 2021, at approximately 11:16 p.m., Lexington police were dispatched to the 1800 block of Colchester Drive following reports of gunfire. By the time officers arrived at the scene, the individuals involved in the altercation had already fled.
The chaotic scene was described by witnesses as individuals in the front yard shooting back and forth at each other.
Shortly after the initial call, another report came in at 11:26 p.m. regarding a single-vehicle accident at the intersection of Limestone and Virginia Avenue. Responding officers discovered two male occupants in the vehicle, both of whom had sustained gunshot wounds. The two victims, in a desperate attempt to get help, had tried to drive themselves to the hospital. One of the victims was Herbie Quintell Booker. They were transported from the crash site to the University of Kentucky Hospital.
Despite the efforts to save him, Herbie Quintell Booker was pronounced dead by the Fayette County Coroner's office just minutes after arriving at the hospital. The other victim, a 19-year-old man, was reported to be in stable condition. The investigation later confirmed that the two individuals in the car crash were the victims of the shooting that had occurred on Colchester Drive.
The investigation into Booker's death has remained ongoing, yet no arrests have been made in the case. The Lexington Police Department has not publicly identified any suspects in connection with the homicide.
