On the evening of June 17, 2020, tragedy struck in a residential neighborhood in Lexington, Kentucky, involving Gregory Lee Fisher, a 30-year-old Black male who was a resident of the city. The incident occurred outside a home on Atiya Place, where Gregory was present before a vehicle approached the residence. Inside the vehicle was his younger brother, Camren Fisher, who had driven to the location.
Without warning, the encounter turned violent when Camren discharged a firearm, striking Gregory in the head before immediately fleeing the scene in his vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived to find Gregory in critical condition. He was hastily transported to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel to save him, his injuries proved too severe, and he later died at the hospital. The shooting left the local community and the family grappling with the sudden loss and the confusing circumstances of a violent act committed between siblings.
Law enforcement officers quickly identified Camren Fisher as the suspect and tracked him to a residence on Alexandria Drive, where he was taken into custody without further incident. Following his arrest, the legal process revealed that Camren suffered from schizophrenia, a factor that played a significant role in the court proceedings. In July 2022, Camren pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, with the plea acknowledging his mental illness. During the hearings, he expressed an inability to explain his motive for the shooting. He was subsequently sentenced to serve ten years in prison for the death of his brother.
