On a Thursday afternoon in Lexington, Kentucky, the life of 51-year-old Raymond Bernard Brooks, a male, was cut short in an act of violence. The incident unfolded around noon on September 22, 2022, at an apartment complex located in the 1700 block of Jennifer Road. First responders arrived at the scene to find Brooks with life-threatening injuries from a shooting.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Raymond Bernard Brooks succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The perpetrator had fled the scene before law enforcement arrived, prompting an investigation into the city's 36th homicide of the year.
Weeks later, investigators identified a suspect in the fatal shooting. On a Friday in November, 37-year-old Jonathan Lockhart was charged with the murder of Raymond Brooks. At the time the murder charge was brought against him, Lockhart was already incarcerated at the Fayette County Detention Center for other alleged offenses, including drug trafficking and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. These prior charges stemmed from an arrest that occurred just five days after Brooks's death, during which authorities found methamphetamine and a handgun at his residence. In addition to the murder charge, Lockhart was also facing a first-degree robbery charge.
