In a tragic series of events that unfolded in Lexington, Kentucky, a 36-year-old man, James Daniel Potter, lost his life. On the evening of March 25, 2018, what was initially believed to be a car accident on Maxwelton Court turned out to be a homicide investigation. Potter was found in his truck after it had gone up an embankment and struck a University of Kentucky building.
First responders, including a University of Kentucky police officer, initially thought Potter had overdosed and crashed, finding needles and other drug paraphernalia in his vehicle.
It wasn't until he was transported to the UK Chandler Hospital that medical staff discovered he had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. James Potter succumbed to his injuries and passed away four days later, on March 29, 2018. The Fayette County Coroner's office officially ruled his death a homicide.
The investigation into Potter's death led to the arrest of Chase Weston Helvey, who was 26 at the time. Prosecutors alleged that the violent encounter stemmed from a dispute over a mere $90 that Helvey claimed he was owed by Potter's girlfriend, Rebecca Richardson. On that fatal night, Helvey is said to have brutally assaulted Richardson with a blowtorch before shooting Potter in the head. According to prosecutors, another individual present, who was also charged with assault but took a plea deal to testify against Helvey, heard Helvey brag that it only took 'one shot.'
Chase Helvey was indicted by a grand jury and faced multiple charges, including murder, first-degree assault, and tampering with physical evidence. The subsequent trial brought to light the grim details of the events that transpired, painting a picture of a senseless act of violence that cut short the life of James Potter.
