On a summer evening in Lexington, Kentucky, the life of 31-year-old Montez Lamont Graves, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On June 7, 2015, shots rang out in the area of Whitney Avenue and Michigan Street. When police arrived around 6 p.m., they discovered Graves and his brother, Frederick Thomas Spillman, inside a car, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Both men were rushed to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where Montez Graves ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
His brother survived the attack.
The violence that befell the Graves family was not isolated to this single, tragic event. Later that same evening, in a separate but nearby shooting, their uncle, 54-year-old Ronnie Graves, was also fatally shot while in his car on Charles Avenue. This series of events cast a shadow over the community, prompting police to increase patrols and appeal to the public for information to piece together the violent puzzle that had left two family members dead.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting that claimed Montez Graves's life, police apprehended a suspect seen fleeing the scene. Jermaine M. Anderson, then 21 years old, was initially taken into custody on charges of fleeing police, tampering with evidence, and trafficking in a controlled substance. However, as the investigation progressed, the charges against Anderson were escalated significantly. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Montez Graves and first-degree assault for the injuries sustained by Frederick Spillman.
The case against Jermaine Anderson proceeded through the justice system, and in December 2017, the trial began. The prosecution laid out its case, asserting that shell casings found at the scene matched a handgun that Anderson had discarded. The defense, in turn, argued that Anderson had acted in self-defense. The arrest and subsequent legal proceedings brought a measure of official closure to the case, though the profound loss of Montez Lamont Graves continues to be felt by his family and loved ones.
