In the fall of 2016, the life of 18-year-old Trayona McDowell was tragically cut short. On November 9, 2016, the young female was shot and killed inside her home on Egypt Lane in the Okolona neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. A student at Ballard High School and a member of Friendship Baptist Church, she was the mother of a 10-month-old child at the time of her death.
The investigation into her death quickly led police to two juvenile suspects who, according to law enforcement, were
known to McDowell. The individuals arrested were 16-year-olds Jacquan Hardin and Troy Hurt Jr. It was revealed that Hurt was McDowell's boyfriend and the motive for the murder was rooted in his belief that she was pregnant with his child. He had reportedly wanted her to have an abortion. A tragic detail emerged from the coroner's autopsy, which concluded that McDowell was not pregnant at the time of her death.
The legal process determined that both teenagers would be tried as adults for the crime. During the investigation, Hardin stated he was with Hurt at the apartment complex but was outside when he heard gunshots. Following the shooting, the two fled in a car. They were pulled over later that day, and a gun was discovered in the vehicle.
Ultimately, Jacquan Hardin's case was transferred to juvenile court. In July 2019, Troy Hurt Jr., then 18, was sentenced to the maximum of 25 years in prison for the murder of Trayona McDowell. Before his sentencing, Hurt offered an apology to McDowell's family for his actions. Under the terms of his sentence, he will be required to serve 20 years before becoming eligible for parole.
