In the city of Louisville, Kentucky, a young life was tragically cut short on January 30, 2017. John Thomas Grover, a 25-year-old Black male, was found deceased inside his home in the Park Hill neighborhood. The discovery was made by his uncle, who had heard several gunshots and immediately called for help. When police arrived at the residence, located near the intersection of Wilson Avenue and 15th Street, they found Mr. Grover had been fatally shot.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting, which occurred in the middle of the afternoon, prompted an immediate and thorough investigation by the Louisville Metro Police Department. Hoping that the brazen nature of a daytime shooting would mean there were witnesses, authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead them to the person or persons responsible for this violent act. Their investigative efforts soon pointed them towards two individuals, not from Louisville, but from Chicago.
In a display of inter-agency cooperation, the investigation led to the identification of Phillip Jackson and Gerad Carter as suspects in the shooting death of John Thomas Grover. Both men were subsequently located and apprehended in Chicago on misdemeanor charges. They were held there on warrants issued from Louisville in connection with Mr. Grover's death. The arrests brought a measure of progress to a case that had shaken a Louisville community, highlighting the lengths to which law enforcement will go to seek justice for a life taken too soon.
