In the early morning hours of August 27, 2023, a night of celebration turned into a scene of tragedy in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, ending the life of 37-year-old Terrance Bethel. The male victim was attending a 'last rodeo' party at the Southern Restaurant & Lounge on West Market Street, an event marking the closing of that location with an estimated 200 to 300 people in attendance. Around 3:00 a.m., gunfire erupted outside the establishment, creating a chaotic scene. When police arrived, they found Bethel deceased.
The shooting left a significant impact, with another man, 35-year-old Colby Banks, also losing his life after being transported to the hospital. Four other individuals, three women and one man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the incident. Friends and family of Terrance Bethel remembered him as a good-hearted person and a devoted father to his young daughter. They described him as the life of the party and someone who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need.
Weeks after the fatal shooting, an arrest was made in connection with the violence that claimed two lives. On September 15, 2023, the Louisville Metro Police Department arrested 38-year-old Arthur Simson, who also goes by the last name Simpson. Simson faced serious charges, including two counts of murder and four counts of second-degree assault. The investigation revealed that Simson had been working as a security guard at the Southern Restaurant and Lounge on the night of the shooting.
According to court documents, Simson went to the police on August 30, 2023, where he turned in the handgun used in the shooting and admitted to being the individual seen firing the weapon in surveillance footage from the area. Simson pleaded not guilty to the charges, and a judge set his bond at one million dollars. It was also reported that Simson had a prior criminal record, including a domestic violence conviction for which he was on probation at the time of the shooting. He had also been a witness in another deadly nightclub shooting in 2012 and had worked security at a hookah lounge during another fatal incident in 2019.
