James Mansfield, a 20-year-old Black / African American male, was found deceased in the front yard of a residence in the 4900 block of Bethune Court in the Newburg neighborhood on the night of June 10, 2019. He had been fatally shot shortly after leaving his job.
The discovery sent ripples of grief through his family and the community, leaving behind his 9-week-old son who would never have the chance to know his father.
The investigation into the death of James Mansfield led the Louisville Metro Police Department to a suspect within a week. On June 17, 2019, 35-year-old Randall Trice was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the shooting. The arrest was reportedly made based on a witness identification. During a court appearance, Trice maintained his innocence, claiming he was a 'fall guy.' His family indicated that he had a history of mental health issues.
As the legal process began for the accused, the family of James Mansfield prepared to lay him to rest. His funeral services were held on June 21, 2019, at Community Missionary Baptist Church. The community mourned the loss of a young man whose life was taken just as he was starting his own family, a life filled with promise that was abruptly and violently ended.
