In the early hours of a Monday morning in Louisville, Kentucky, a tragic event unfolded that would claim the lives of two family members and lead to the arrest of another. On October 2, 2023, 17-year-old Giovanni J. Rodriguez, a male, was shot and killed. The incident also resulted in the death of his 55-year-old grandfather, Miguel Ricardo. The tranquility of the Douglas Park apartments in south Louisville was shattered around 3:50 a.m.
when police responded to reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival at the apartment, officers discovered a grim scene. Both Giovanni and his grandfather were found inside, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services were called to the location, but their efforts were in vain as both victims were pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation into the double homicide quickly focused on a primary suspect who was also present at the apartment.
The individual taken into custody was Yunior Rodriguez Ricardo, the 40-year-old father of Giovanni and the son of Miguel Ricardo. According to police reports, he admitted to shooting both his son and his father. Investigators also located a firearm with a defaced serial number hidden under a pest control box. Subsequently, he was arrested and faced multiple charges, including two counts of murder, tampering with physical evidence, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, and possession of a defaced firearm. This was not his first encounter with the law; he had a prior conviction for manslaughter related to a stabbing in 2013 for which he had served time in prison.
In the days following the incident, Yunior Rodriguez Ricardo was arraigned in court where a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf with the assistance of a translator. During the court proceedings, a judge ordered that he undergo a mental health evaluation. He was being held on a half-million-dollar bond as the legal process began to address the violent end of his son and father's lives.
