On the final day of a year marked by a surge in violence in Louisville, Kentucky, the lives of two young people were tragically cut short. In the early morning hours of December 31, 2020, 23-year-old Daniel Key, Jr., a Black male, and 21-year-old Antonia Lucas were discovered shot to death inside a vehicle in the Smoketown neighborhood. The car was found on Lampton Street, and the Jefferson County Coroner's Office later confirmed that both individuals had died from gunshot wounds.
The
initial investigation by the Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit began with few leads, and authorities appealed to the public for any information regarding potential suspects. For nearly two years, the case remained a painful open wound for the families of Daniel and Antonia, who yearned for justice. A significant breakthrough finally came in July 2022 when a Jefferson County Grand Jury indicted Mahlon Harris for the murders. The indictment charged Harris with two counts of murder, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, and being a persistent felony offender.
Investigators were able to link Harris to the crime through cell phone records, which showed calls between Key's phone and a number associated with Harris in the time leading up to the discovery of the victims' bodies. Following a two-week trial, a jury found Mahlon Harris guilty on two counts of murder and the firearms charge. Prosecutors recommended two consecutive life sentences. In June 2025, a judge sentenced Harris to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years. Though Harris maintained his innocence and requested a new trial, the motion was denied, bringing a close to the legal chapter of a case that had deeply affected the community and left two families mourning an immeasurable loss.
