In the heart of downtown Louisville, amid the passionate cries for justice that filled Jefferson Square Park in the summer of 2020, Tyler Charles Gerth, a 27-year-old male, sought to capture the historic moments with his camera. Driven by a deep sense of justice and a desire to document the movement against systemic racism, he had become a familiar face at the peaceful demonstrations that followed the death of Breonna Taylor.
His passion for photography was intertwined with his belief in advocating for a better, more equitable world.
On the evening of June 27, 2020, as protesters gathered, the atmosphere of peaceful assembly was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Steven Lopez, a man who had been reportedly disruptive at previous protests, opened fire into the crowd. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as people scrambled for cover, hiding behind whatever they could find to escape the volley of bullets. In the midst of this pandemonium, Tyler Gerth was struck by a bullet and fatally wounded. First responders rushed to his aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooter, Steven Lopez, was identified by witnesses and video footage and was taken into custody shortly after the incident. It was revealed that he had been asked to leave the demonstrations on numerous occasions due to his disruptive behavior. After his arrest, Lopez claimed he had been homeless and using drugs, which made him perceive a reality that was not real. He stated that he felt he was 'being bullied at the rally' and that he was convinced he was about to die, a claim the prosecution disputed.
In February 2024, Steven Lopez pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and 22 counts of wanton endangerment. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison. During his sentencing, Lopez apologized to Tyler's family, expressing deep remorse for his actions. He stated, 'I cannot find enough words to convey how sorry I am... I will forever remember the name Tyler Gerth and do everything I can to live up to the man he was.' Tyler's family, though devastated by their loss, expressed a desire for Lopez to turn his life around and for Tyler's death to be a catalyst for peace. His sister, speaking after the sentencing, said she chose to forgive Lopez because of her faith and hoped he would be inspired by the man he had taken from them.
