He was scheduled to sign a record deal in Atlanta on December 28, 2020, a testament to his hard work and the bright future that lay ahead.
The promise of that future was cruelly extinguished on the evening of December 16, 2020. In a senseless act of violence in southwest Louisville, Johnson and another young man, 23-year-old Tyron Grant, were fatally shot. The two men were near Magic Liquor on Gagel Avenue, between Dixie Highway and Manslick Road, when the attack occurred. The perpetrators, described as two individuals cloaked in black and wearing masks, were seen fleeing the scene in a dark-colored vehicle, disappearing into the night.
In the years that have followed, the pain of that night remains fresh for the families of John Johnson and Tyron Grant. Johnson's case, like so many others in what was a record year for homicides in Louisville, remains unsolved. The Louisville Metro Police Department's investigation is ongoing, but no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. His mother, Lakesia Jeffrey, has become a vocal advocate for justice for her son, determined that his voice will not be forgotten.
