In the summer of 2021, a quiet neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky, was shaken by a brutal crime that claimed the lives of a father and his young daughter. Vernon Leslie Lee, Jr., a 52-year-old male, was found deceased in his home on Lyons Avenue on the evening of August 15, 2021. Alongside him was his 9-year-old daughter, Kaylee Lee; both had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Vernon, born on February 17, 1969, was known for his love of motorcycles and his skill as an automobile mechanic.
The initial investigation by the Louisville Metro Police Department quickly determined that the deaths were homicides. Evidence at the scene pointed towards a home invasion and robbery as the motive. A safe within the residence had been emptied of its contents, items which were later identified by the family as missing. The senseless nature of the crime, particularly the death of a young child, spurred a determined effort by law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.
More than six months after the tragic event, a significant breakthrough in the case was announced. Through a combination of phone records, video surveillance, and tips from the community, investigators were able to identify two suspects. Antonia Brown, 53, was apprehended in Louisville. The second suspect, Antonio Sanderson, was located and arrested in Tempe, Arizona, to await extradition back to Kentucky. Both men were subsequently charged with two counts of complicity to murder and complicity to robbery, bringing a measure of resolution to a grieving family and a community deeply affected by the loss of Vernon and Kaylee Lee.
