In the early evening of August 25, 2021, a burst of violence in a Zaxby's restaurant parking lot on Fern Valley Road in Louisville, Kentucky, claimed the life of 17-year-old Devor Andre' Stoner Jr. The young man was fatally shot and, despite the arrival of medical help, was pronounced dead at the scene. His death set in motion a complex series of events that would involve a murder investigation, an arrest, and serious allegations against the Louisville Metro Police Department.
The
investigation into the shooting led police to identify and locate all individuals they believed to be involved. Nearly a year later, in July 2022, a man named Antonio Lawson was indicted by a grand jury. The charges brought against him were complicity to murder and complicity to robbery, tying him directly to the events that led to Stoner's death. Court documents would later suggest that the fatal encounter occurred during an attempted carjacking in which Stoner and Lawson were allegedly involved. According to these documents, the intended victim of the carjacking shot Stoner.
The narrative of Stoner's death became more convoluted when his mother, Shawanda Carter, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the LMPD. In her lawsuit, Carter made the explosive claim that her son had been acting as a confidential informant for the police at the time of his death. Her attorney pointed to a cell phone video from the scene, which they claimed showed an officer removing surveillance wires from Stoner's body. The lawsuit alleged that by using her minor son as an informant, the police had placed him in a perilous situation that directly resulted in his death.
The Louisville Metro Police Department vehemently denied these allegations, stating that they 'resoundingly refute' the claims made in the lawsuit. In an effort to counter the accusations, the department released body camera footage from the scene to provide their account of the events and to dispute the assertion that Stoner was working with them. The case, therefore, evolved into a contentious legal battle, with criminal proceedings against the suspect running parallel to the civil lawsuit brought by a grieving mother seeking answers and accountability for the loss of her son.
