In the Smoketown neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, a young life was cut short by gun violence on the evening of Friday, February 24, 2023. Carlos Alejandro Vera Valdes, a 19-year-old Hispanic male, was fatally shot at 516 East Breckinridge Street. Born in Manzanillo, Cuba on November 27, 2003, Carlos was known for his love for animals, often taking in stray dogs and nursing them back to health. He had a passion for working out, playing video games, and had a fondness for the color pink.
In high school, he was active in sports, playing football and wrestling, where he had won several matches.
At the time of his death, Carlos was enrolled in college with aspirations of following in his father's footsteps to become a dental hygienist. Described as a kind and good person who made sure the people he loved knew it, his death has left a significant void in the lives of his family and friends. He was remembered by a childhood friend's parent as someone who brought sunshine into their lives and was loved instantly by those who met him.
The Louisville Metro Police Department is investigating the shooting as an open homicide case. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the death of Carlos Alejandro Vera Valdes, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation into his murder remains ongoing as his family continues to seek answers and justice for their loss.
