On the evening of October 6, 2015, Joseph Keith Otis, a 55-year-old Black / African American male, was at Club Cedar on South 26th Street in Louisville, Kentucky, when a dispute escalated into a fatal shooting. The incident was the culmination of a long-standing conflict between Otis and another man, Maurice Deal.
The trouble between the two had reportedly begun over a year prior when Otis accused Deal of damaging his vehicle.
This animosity festered, leading to a physical altercation at the same club just days before the deadly shooting, during which Otis had knocked Deal unconscious. On the night of October 6th, the conflict reached its tragic conclusion. Witnesses stated that Deal initiated another fight with Otis. During this struggle, a gun was introduced, and Otis was shot in the neck, dying at the scene. Deal also sustained a gunshot wound to his hand.
Two days after the shooting, Maurice Deal, then 51, was arrested and charged with the murder of Joseph Otis. The subsequent legal proceedings revealed more complex details, including the presence of Deal's brother at the club who was suspected by some of being the actual shooter, though it was never definitively proven who fired the fatal shot. Ultimately, a jury found Maurice Deal guilty of complicity to second-degree manslaughter, and he was sentenced to ten years in prison. Joseph Otis, known affectionately as 'Keke,' was a beloved member of his community and an employee of Metro Public Works.
