In the early hours of a summer Sunday in Louisville, Kentucky, the life of 23-year-old Andre Deon Payne, Jr., a Black male, was tragically cut short. On June 6, 2021, gunshots shattered the night outside Cole's Place, a nightclub located in the 2900 block of West Kentucky Street. Responding officers found Payne in the parking lot around 1:30 a.m., suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency services rushed him to the University of Louisville Hospital in a desperate attempt to save
his life. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Payne succumbed to his injuries, leaving a community to grapple with another act of gun violence. The nightclub issued a statement expressing its condolences to Payne's family and appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the identification of the shooter.
In the days that followed the fatal shooting, the Louisville Metro Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. However, the case proved challenging, and as of early reports, no arrests had been made, and police had not publicly identified any suspects. The investigation into who was responsible for Andre Payne, Jr.'s death remains open.
