On a Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky, a sequence of violent events led to the death of 26-year-old Edward Lamont Smith. On September 10, 2022, at approximately 2:45 p.m., officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department responded to a shooting report in the Russell neighborhood. They discovered Smith, who had been fatally shot, in the 400 block of 26th Street, near Cedar Street.
Just moments after the discovery of Smith, another call directed police one block away to the
2500 block of Cedar Street. There, they found 24-year-old Alexis McCrary, who had also been shot and killed inside a vehicle. Investigators quickly determined that the two shootings were related and that Smith and McCrary were in a relationship. The double homicide shocked the community and left McCrary's family seeking justice for their loved one.
The investigation into the killings led to the identification of a suspect vehicle through surveillance footage from the area. A few days later, police located the vehicle and arrested 31-year-old Maurice Gibson. According to his arrest report, Gibson admitted to driving the murder suspect away from the scene following the shootings. He was charged with two counts of complicity to murder.
Weeks later, police arrested 31-year-old Paul Wade in connection with the deaths of Smith and McCrary. Surveillance video reportedly captured one of the shootings, which led to the identification of Wade as the primary suspect. He was charged with two counts of murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. During a subsequent court hearing, a brawl erupted when Wade allegedly taunted the victims' families, leading to several arrests for disorderly conduct and assault. Wade entered a plea of not guilty, and a judge set his bond at one million dollars.
