In the early evening of a summer day in Louisville, Kentucky, the life of 11-year-old Jakari Avonte Griffin was tragically cut short. On Monday, June 27, 2022, emergency responders were called to a home in the 4700 block of East Pages Lane near Valley Station, where they found young Jakari with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Norton Children's Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
Jakari was a bright light to those who knew him.
A student at Trunnell Elementary School, he was remembered by his fifth-grade teacher as a child who could do anything he set his mind to, from basketball to spelling. He had a cheerful personality and was known for lifting the spirits of those around him. His sudden and tragic death left his family, friends, and teachers heartbroken.
The Louisville Metro Police Department investigated the shooting and, after conducting interviews, determined that the incident was accidental. An LMPD spokesman stated that they did not anticipate filing any charges in connection with the shooting. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office confirmed that Jakari's death was the result of a gunshot wound.
In the days that followed, loved ones gathered to celebrate Jakari's life and mourn their loss. A funeral service was held at Owen Funeral Home, and he was laid to rest in Resthaven Cemetery. His family, including his mother, Iesha Leonard, and his siblings, were left to grieve the profound loss of a young boy who was described as a kind and funny person who was fun to be around.
