In the early morning hours of August 7, 2021, the life of 37-year-old Stephon Demarcus Bruce Garner, a male resident of Louisville, Kentucky, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded in the parking lot of a Circle K convenience store on South Third Street in the Wilder Park neighborhood. Garner was shot multiple times and was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
An unexpected turn of events occurred more than an hour after the
shooting when 26-year-old Coretta Hale returned to the crime scene. Hale, who was an employee at the Circle K, approached the police and confessed to the shooting. Her admission, 'It's me, I shot him,' led to her immediate arrest. A witness at the scene had previously described a woman matching Hale's appearance, wearing a red Circle K shirt and black pants, as the shooter who fled in a Buick LeSabre. This account was corroborated by surveillance footage from the convenience store.
Following her confession, Coretta Hale was charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence, as the weapon used in the shooting was not in her possession at the time of her surrender. Reports from a former co-worker of Hale's suggested a history of conflict between her and Garner, alleging that he had previously threatened her and had spit in her face. While authorities acknowledged they were aware of a potential relationship between the two, the specific motive for the shooting remains part of the ongoing investigation. The case against Hale is proceeding through the legal system.
