In the quiet community of West Buechel, a suburb of Louisville, Kentucky, a tragedy unfolded that left more questions than answers. It was on January 29, 2022, that 30-year-old Joonhee Virginia Han, an Asian female, was found deceased in an apartment on Fountain Drive. Her life was cut short in what authorities would later describe as an apparent murder-suicide.
The discovery was made after the West Buechel Police Department was called to the residence, where they found two bodies, prompting them to notify the Louisville Metro Police Department's homicide unit.
Alongside Joonhee, authorities found the body of Niko Sturdivant, a 33-year-old off-duty officer from the New Albany Police Department. Both had sustained gunshot wounds. The initial investigation pointed towards a murder-suicide, a grim conclusion to a situation that left a community in shock. Sturdivant had been a member of the New Albany Police Department since October of 2018. The connection between Han and Sturdivant and the events that led to their final moments in the Fountain Drive apartment became the focus of the ensuing investigation.
As the Louisville Metro Police Department's homicide unit took the lead in the investigation, the community awaited answers. However, the nature of the incident, with both individuals involved being deceased at the scene, meant there were no suspects to pursue and no arrests to be made. The coroner's office officially confirmed the identities of both Joonhee Virginia Han and Niko Sturdivant. Despite the official investigation, the conclusive determination of which individual was the perpetrator in the murder-suicide has not been publicly released, leaving a lingering sense of uncertainty surrounding the tragic end of two lives.
