On August 28, 2022, the life of 24-year-old Skyelor Logan Skye Centers, a White male resident of Florence, Kentucky, came to a sudden end during a late-night incident. Just after midnight, emergency responders and law enforcement were dispatched to a residence on the 100 block of Becky Court in Florence following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, deputies from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office discovered Centers suffering from two gunshot wounds to his upper body.
Despite immediate lifesaving efforts performed by both witnesses and responding deputies, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by Florence Fire and EMS personnel.
The investigation into the events leading up to the shooting revealed that the altercation involved an acquaintance, 23-year-old Robert E. Sano of Erlanger, Kentucky. According to official reports, Sano had driven to the residence on Becky Court that evening. When he arrived, he remained in his vehicle while Centers, who was unarmed at the time, approached him. During this encounter outside the home, Sano discharged a firearm twice, striking Centers. Unlike many similar incidents, the suspect did not attempt to flee the area after the shots were fired.
Deputies detained Sano at the scene without further incident. A search of his vehicle yielded the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting, which was located in plain view. Consequently, Robert E. Sano was arrested and booked into the Boone County Detention Center. He was formally charged with one count of manslaughter in the second degree, a Class C felony, as authorities determined the shooting was the result of a confrontation rather than a premeditated act of murder.
Skyelor Centers was remembered by his community and family, leaving behind a wife, a young daughter, and his parents. Born in Florence in 1997, he was a local resident whose death sparked an immediate investigation by the Boone County Sheriff’s Office. While the legal proceedings against Sano commenced with the manslaughter charge, the initial inquiry confirmed that the victim had no weapon on his person when he was killed, a key factor in the charges brought against the suspect.
