In the early morning hours of August 18, 2016, a quiet Waffle House parking lot in Florence, Kentucky, became the scene of a violent crime that claimed the life of 42-year-old Juan Vega. A resident of Fairfield, Ohio, Vega was discovered in the driver's seat of his vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. The incident unfolded at approximately 5 a.m. at the restaurant located on Burlington Pike.
Law enforcement responded to a report of shots fired in the parking lot and found Vega
grievously wounded. He was quickly transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced deceased upon arrival. Investigators learned that Vega had been inside the Waffle House earlier that morning before the shooting occurred.
Despite their efforts, police were unable to immediately identify a suspect or a motive for the attack. In the initial stages of the investigation, authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest. The Florence Police Department urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident or had any relevant details to come forward. To date, there have been no publicly announced arrests or naming of any suspects in the years following the shooting.
