In the early morning hours of a summer Saturday in Florence, Kentucky, a birthday celebration turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy. Twenty-year-old Shane Miller, a young man remembered for his kindness and huge smile, was among those who lost their lives on July 6, 2024. He was a 2021 graduate of Cooper High School who found joy in the simple pleasures of life, often spending his days fishing and kayaking with those he held dear.
His aunt described him as 'a young man that any parent would be proud to call their own,' someone who was always smiling and had a kind word for everyone.
The setting was a 21st birthday party for the son of Melissa Parrett, who was also killed in the attack. The festive gathering at the Parrett family home on Ridgecrest Drive was shattered at approximately 3 a.m. when gunfire erupted. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Chase Garvey of Florence, arrived at the party uninvited. According to reports, Garvey's ex-girlfriend was present at the party. He was known to some of the partygoers.
In the midst of the chaos, Miller’s heroic instincts took over as he acted to protect others from the gunman. Tragically, he was one of four victims fatally shot, along with Melissa Parrett, 44, Hayden Rybicki, 20, and Delaney Eary, 19. Three other individuals were also wounded in the shooting but were expected to recover.
After the shooting, the suspect, Chase Garvey, fled the scene in a vehicle. A police pursuit ended when Garvey's vehicle crashed in a ditch. Officers discovered that Garvey had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. It was later revealed that Garvey had a prior criminal record, having pleaded guilty in 2023 to a felony offense and was sentenced to five years of probation. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation, but this senseless act of violence cut short the lives of four people, including a young man with a bright future who was loved by many for his warm and fun-loving spirit.
