In the early morning hours of July 6, 2024, the community of Florence, Kentucky, was shattered by a violent act that claimed the life of 20-year-old Hayden Rybicki and three others. Rybicki, a male described by friends as having a 'contagious grin,' was attending a 21st birthday party at a home on Ridgecrest Drive when the celebration turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy.
The young man, who had a passion for cars, snowboarding, and videography, was remembered for his ability to bring a smile to anyone's face.
The incident unfolded just before 3 a.m. when Chase Garvey, 21, arrived uninvited at the party. For reasons that remain under investigation, Garvey opened fire on the partygoers, fatally wounding Rybicki, Shane Miller, 20, Delaney Eary, 19, and the party's host, 44-year-old Melissa Parrett. Three other individuals were also injured in the mass shooting but were reported to be in stable condition. The home where the party was taking place belonged to Parrett, who was celebrating her son's 21st birthday.
Following the shooting, Garvey fled the scene, leading police on a car chase. The pursuit ended when Garvey's vehicle crashed into a ditch. Officers approaching the car discovered that Garvey had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Authorities later confirmed that Garvey had a prior criminal record, including a conviction for a sexual offense. In the wake of the tragedy, the Florence community came together to mourn the victims, holding vigils and creating fundraisers to support the affected families.
