In the summer of 2025, a custody dispute in Florence, Kentucky, escalated to a fatal conclusion, claiming the life of 29-year-old John Lawyer. On July 25th, at the Normandy Green Apartments on Lloyd Avenue, what began as a verbal disagreement over custody matters turned violent. During the argument, Anastazia M. Calhoun, 28, is alleged to have produced a handgun and fired a single shot.
Responding to the incident, Florence police discovered Lawyer in a common hallway of the apartment
building with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was quickly transported to St. Elizabeth–Florence Hospital, but the injury proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
At the scene, officers detained Calhoun. Following an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting, detectives determined there was probable cause to charge her with murder. She was subsequently arrested and booked into the Boone County Jail. Authorities have stated that the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
