On April 23, 2022, Darius Deshawn Light, aged 29, was fatally shot in Minneapolis, MN. The incident occurred just before noon on the 4100 block of Portland Avenue in south Minneapolis. Darius was in the process of moving items from a residence when a dispute arose between him and his older brother, Anthony D. Light, aged 42. According to the criminal complaint, the altercation began when Anthony slapped another individual who was assisting Darius. In response, Darius pushed his brother.
Anthony then went inside the house, retrieved a. 22 caliber rifle, and fired approximately six shots at Darius, who was standing outside the passenger side of the second individual's car.
Darius was found approximately four blocks away from the shooting scene, near 41st Street and Park Avenue. He was taken to Hennepin Healthcare, where he succumbed to a gunshot wound to the left side of his back. Witnesses reported that Anthony remained at the house after the shooting and was subsequently arrested by the police. A search of the premises revealed a. 22 caliber rifle in the back of a vehicle Anthony had been seen entering and exiting, along with two rifle magazines inside the house.
Anthony D. Light was charged with second-degree intentional murder, second-degree assault, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He has two prior felony convictions for illicit drugs, which made him ineligible to possess a gun. Anthony remains in custody, with bail set at $1 million, and is awaiting a court appearance.
