Deandre Intonio Smith, aged 33, was fatally shot on June 5, 2021, in Minneapolis, MN. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. near the light-rail stop on Hennepin Avenue and South Fifth Street. According to reports, a Metro Transit police officer witnessed an altercation in the area and saw a man shoot Smith. The officer then shot the suspect in the leg.
Smith was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead due to multiple gunshot wounds.
The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Kevion Jamal Gibbs from Mississippi, was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and subsequently taken into police custody. Gibbs has been charged with intentional second-degree murder for the death of Deandre Intonio Smith. In addition to Smith's death, two other fatal shootings occurred in Minneapolis that same night. A woman was shot and dropped off at North Memorial hospital, where she died before police could speak to her. Another man was killed near East Lake Street after being struck by a stray bullet during a fight involving people in cars.
